Sigma Dm3 Guitar Serial Numbers
This is part of Martin's Japanese import line of the 70s - Sigma. The DM5 is basically a Martin-designed dreadnaught guitar, with the same bracing as a USA model, but different woods. It has a 'natowood' neck - I'm honestly unfamiliar with this type of wood, but I can say that the neck of the guitar. So you need to figure out the date of your Martin guitar.It's actually a lot easier than you may think. Unlike the nebulous web of varying schemes and numbering systems used by companies like Gibson over the decades, Martin has employed a single string of serial numbers for a vast majority of its guitars going all the way back to 1898. Got a sigma dm2 i've had for years but needs some work. A guy at a music shop said some of those sigmas could be worth a few hundred bucks. I'd like to have an idea on it before i try to fix it myself.the serial number is 87110807 on the paper tag in soundhole that also says c.f. Serial numbers for Sigma guitars built in Korea and Taiwan are perhaps meaningless, though again some seem to indicate the year of manufacture (e.g. 81XXXXXX.) Since we know these instruments were manufactured from 1984 through 2007 in these two countries, it is safe to assume that a serial number beginning with 81XXXXXX was not produced in 1981. I was sure that my Sigma DR-41 was made in 1982 since the serial number starts with E82 but since this Sigma DR-35’s serial number also starts with E82 and came with a receipt that proves that it was sold in September 1980 it must have been made that year, or earlier.
I thought I would post this under Guitar Critics Corner because these are not 'real' Martins. Don't want to open a can of worms, but I have been looking for an inexpensive 12 string and I ran across (on line) a Sigma. I don't know anything about these guitars except they were made by/for Martin, I think in Korea.Martin Sigma Dm3 Guitar
Can anyone enlighten me on these? Are they all laminate? Solid tops maybe? Are they worth even considering? The asking price is only a few hundred $, so I though they would be worth investigating.Any input is appreciated.
